Artist Of The Month For June 2022: William Brown
William Brown through his artistic practice pushes the boundaries of what constitutes art and in the process, radically transforms the way in which his work is created and consumed. Brown started as a photographer in the early 1970s after his graduation in psychology. His work merges elements from mediums as diverse as film, sculpture, painting, and photography.
Brown completed his MFA from the University of Florida. Importantly, he was instrumental in establishing the art syllabus for Contemporary Art Centre in Atlanta and the studio programme at Emory University where he also taught for more than 40 years.
Brown is currently pursuing an avant-garde project ‘Paintings for a Robot’ wherein he makes use of advanced digital technology like film editing techniques to randomly generate collages of images that could be rendered as an oil painting or any other medium for future use by robotic painting devices.
The artist makes use of art images that are available for use in the public domain and then these are combined using various digital technologies to create a compelling image that can either be bought as an oil painting (rendered by robotic painting devices ) or simply as a photo print. The quirky imagery is compelling, provocative and maximlistic.
According to Brown, these robotic painting devices are the future of visual arts wherein the whooping sums of money at which a famous artist sells a single painting will no longer be justified and art will become more accessible and affordable as these machine-generated paintings will acquire centrestage!
Brown is currently working with Art Matr in Red Hook, New York which is the creator of the most advanced robotic painting system till date.
